Volunteer

What

In both San Antonio and New York City, nXu is launching a selective, 2-year, out-of-school fellowship program encompassing the 10th and 11th-grade years. The fellowship brings together 10th graders to explore, articulate, and pursue their purpose in life. nXu Fellows are drawn from a range of district, charter, private and parochial schools to form an intentionally diverse cohort that bridges race, gender, and class lines. During the school year, nXu Fellows gather twice a month for 4-hour sessions led by a Lead Compass Coach and a team of Compass Coaches.

nXu sessions are designed so that everyone who participates— including Compass Coaches—has the opportunity to learn from our curriculum. During each immersive session, the Lead Compass Coach (head facilitator) will set the tone, orient the nXu Fellows to the day’s learning objectives. With support from the Lead  Compass Coach, Compass Coaches will guide the nXu Fellows through the day and support them in learning the session’s objective through a series of engaging activities/practices, reflections, and authentic conversations. Compass Coaches will build a culture of curiosity and vulnerability, ask questions, guide discussions, share their own experiences, and actively engage in the day’s  activities with the Fellows. Our hope is that Compass Coaches will walk away from each session having contributed to the development of the Fellows while also learning something new from our Fellows and the nXu community as well as about themselves.

How:

Our team will ensure that Compass Coaches are positioned for success by providing pre-scripted session content, training, and coaching.  Compass Coaches are required to attend a Compass Coach orientation training before the nXu Fellowship begins and a 30-minute debrief/upcoming session preparation meeting following each fellowship session.

Who:

We are seeking committed volunteer Compass Coaches who will lead 10th grade nXu Fellows through the year-long Purpose Exploration Curriculum. Each Compass Coach will be responsible for a Compass Team (~8 participants). Compass Coaches will guide their Compass Team through a series of pre-scripted and planned immersive activities, conversations, exercises, and reflections to help Fellows bond with one another and begin to understand themselves better.

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • Are eager and excited to be trained and coached to provide an excellent experience for students.

  • Show concrete evidence of and an interest in exploring their self-development.

  • Are intellectually curious, vulnerable, and willing to have a good time.

  • Are willing to share their personal and professional wisdom and experiences.

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and are capable of delivering pre-scripted content.

  • Want to guide nXu participants to reach their desired life purpose goals and help them reflect on various experiences.

  • Are excited to explore NYC with a group of GREAT kids (rain or shine).
